Headline: Doosan Babcock strengthens foothold in Latin America with £75 million contract
Story Date: 12/01/2009

Doosan Babcock, the leading global energy services company, today announced a new contract to supply mechanical and electrical technology to the coal power plant project Porto do Pecém II in Brazil. The contract, worth in excess of £75 million, relates to an additional 365MW unit, extending an existing contract, which was signed in February 2008, for two units at Pecém I, and one unit at Itaqui. The customer, MABE (Mabe Construçao e Administraçao de Projetos Ltda.), is a consortium led by Tecnimont of Italy and Efacec of Portugal. The Pecém II plant is 100% owned by MPX, the Brazilian mining and power company and is due to be operational in approximately three and a half years.

The project marks a strengthening of Doosan Babcock’s presence and activities in Latin America, which include operations in Chile and further developments in the region concerning clean coal super critical technology. Doosan Babcock’s equipment will supply over 7% of Brazil’s fossil fuel generation, and the project will help re-balance the Latin American market’s reliance on hydro power.

The technology employed by Doosan Babcock at the Pecém plants is based on previous units constructed in China, illustrating the expansion of Doosan Babcock’s business by replicating units country to country.

Iain Miller, CEO, Doosan Babcock, says: “This contract represents a major platform for Doosan Babcock’s expansion in Latin America and an increasing relationship with MPX, a company with major power and related interests in the region. It is a testament to our global capabilities, which enable the delivery of proven technology at competitive prices, leveraging successful operations in other countries. The project will draw on the skills and expertise of members of Doosan Babcock’s workforce from across the globe.”
